What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words which gives a complete meaning when giving a message. There are four types of sentences.

Explain different types of sentence with example?

 1)  Declarative Sentences are the sentences that declare information in a sentence and these always end with full stop.

 

For Example:     Alvin is a good Doctor.
                           Rama cooks tasty food.

2)  Interrogative Sentences are the sentences that always ask some questions and these always end with question mark (?).

 

For Example:     What is your name?
                           Where do you live?

 

3)  Imperative Sentences are the sentences that express commands, orders, or requests and these always end with full stop.

 

For Example:  Do this work.
                        Be honest.

 

4)  Exclamatory Sentences are the sentences that express instant reaction like joy, sorrow, or fear and these always end with exclamation mark (!).

 

For Example: Wow! what a beautiful flower.
                       Hurrah! we won two gold medal in Olympic.

What are the different parts of a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that gives meaning to a message. These words are arranged in specific order to convey a message. Otherwise not in order sentence seems meaningless.

 

For Example:  London Alvin lives in. (Meaningless)
                          Alvin lives in London. (Meaningful)

 

The ideal order of a sentence:

 

Subject + Verb + Object / Complement

 

1) A Subject is a Noun / Pronoun in a sentence, about which something is told.

 

For Example:   Alvin is a good doctor.(here Alvin is a subject)

 

2) A Verb is an action or a state form that tells about a subject.

 

For Example:  Rama is the best writer. (is a state form)
                          Mohit goes to school. (go a action word)

 

3) An Object is affected by the action of a subject in a sentence.

 

For Example:   Shivangi kicked the football (football is object)
                           She bought a car (car is object)

 

What is Phrase in English?

A Phrase is a group of words which doesn’t have complete meaning. It adds extra information in a sentence. There are three types of Phrases

 

Type of Phrase

1)  Noun Phrase plays a role of noun in sentence or object of a verb.

For example: He forgot to carry his bike’s key.


2)  Adjective Phrase plays a role of adjective in a sentence.

For example: Following her couch advice, she got the 1st rank in the race. 


3)  Adverb Phrase plays a role of adverb in a sentence.

For example: I saw her going to school.

What is Article in English grammar?

Articles are used before a noun, so it tells about a noun. There are two types of Articles.


1) Definite Article
2) Indefinite Article


1) Definite Article
is used before singular noun, uncountable noun, and plural nouns


For example: The Ganga (there is only one Gunga river in the world)
                        The Mount Everest (there is only one Mount Everest).


2) Indefinite Article
is used with countable noun when talking about general things. Sometime it’s used to define one thing.


i) ‘A’ Article is used before a noun, which start with consonant sound.


For Example: A dog is a faithful animal.
                        My sister took a cup of tea.


ii) ‘An’ Article is used before a noun, which start with vowel sound.


For Example: Alvin took an orange from the basket.
                         English is an easy language.

 

What is paragraph in a message?

A paragraph is a set of sentences around which one idea is expressed. A paragraph has three parts.


1) Introduction

2) Middle

3) Ending

What are the parts of Speech?

Every word plays a specific role to express some meaning in a sentence. These words are called the part of speech. These are the basic parts of speech:

1- Noun: Noun is a word that tells about person, place or an idea.
                  Example: Earth moves around the sun.

2) Pronoun: Pronoun is a word that is used in place of noun in a sentence. They are used to avoid repetition of noun in a sentence.      
                  Example: Ravi is a doctor. He lives in Delhi.

3) Verb: Verb is a word that tells about action in a sentence. There are two types of verbs transitive and Intransitive verbs.
                Example: They are playing football.

4) Adverb: Adverb is a word which describes a verb or an adjective. It tells about action in a sentence.
               Example: Horse was running slowly.

5) Adjective: An adjective is a word that modifies a pronoun or a noun.
              Example: He was a good doctor.

6) Conjunction: Conjunction is a word which is used to join words or sentences in a paragraph
               Example: We bought books and pens for a shop.

7) Preposition: Preposition is a word that tells relationship between a noun and a pronoun in a sentence.
             Example: We saw a cat under the table in my room.

8) Interjection: Interjection is a word which shows sudden emotions in a sentence.
               Example: Hurray! We won the cricket match.
