What is Computer Virus?

A computer virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. A computer virus can easily attach to other files and programs. The data on the computer can be erased or corrupted by the virus present in the computer. A virus may or may not be destructive, until the computer is shut down.

How does a Computer Virus attach and spread?

Major source of computer virus attack is the internet. A virus can come into your computer without your knowledge when you do normal web activities, for example:


1) Sharing music, files or photos with other users,

2)  Visiting an infected website,

3)  Opening a spam e-mail or attachment,

4)  Downloading free games, medial players and other system utilities,

5)  Installing mainstream software application without fully reading license agreements.

 

What are the symptoms of a Computer Virus?

1)  Unusual messages start appearing on the screen while working,

2)  The computer runs slower than the normal,

3)  The space on the disk is reduced,

4)  Applications take a long time to load and may not work properly,

5)  Files on the computer start missing and vanishes,

6)  The hard disks has more files than it had earlier,

7)  Computer start rebooting unexpectedly,

8)  Computer often freezes and stops responding.

There are many different type of computer virus. They infect the computer in different ways.

 

 1) Malware is a program which harms the computer, and comes into the computer without the user’s consent.

 

2) Spyware is a kind of malware that is sent to someone’s computer intentionally to steal information such as e-mail password, credit card password.

 

 3) Program Virus infects the files with the extension .exe, .com, .sys, .ovl. program files are used by virus as they 

 

4) Trojan Horse is a program which appears to be useful. Confidential information is stolen and passed using this virus. A Trojan horse enters in the computer with the help of the users. The users install it under the wrong impression that it is useful and harmless program.

 

5) Worms is a program which is capable of reproducing spreading itself to another computer system with the help of the computer network. This type of virus doesn’t cause direct damage to the files and programs.

 

6) Boot Sector Virus When computer boots, it loads Operating System in Main Memory(RAM) from Boot Sector. The Boot Sector virus changes the location of the Operating System, so the computer does not boot properly and does not start.

Keep the following points in mind to safeguard your computer system against virus attacks

 

1)  Do not install and run any pirated software on your computer.

 

2)  Install antivirus software onto your computer, and keep it updated.

 

3)  Avoid copying and using files coming from unreliable sources.

 

4)  Restrict the access to your system, both online and offline.

 

5)  Regularly take the back-up of your data and store your back-up at separate place.

 

6)  Content from unreliable sources on the internet should not be downloaded.
