Class 10 IT Chapter - Web Application Network Devices

What is the use of Network Device?

In Computer Network computers and other devices are connect using different devices like Hub, Switch and Router. These devices connects computers logical and share data in a network

What is the use of Hub in Computer Network?

A hub is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN. It interconnects the computer in a LAN. The hub has cables plugged into it from each computer. A hub is a dumb device. If it receives a message, it sends it to every computer on the network. This means that hub-based networks are not very secure, as everyone can listen to the communication.

What is the use of Switch in Computer Network?

A switch, like a hub, is a device that connects a number of computer together to make a LAN. A switch is a more intelligent, it checks whom it is being addressed to and sends it to only that specific computer. Due to this, networks that use switches are more secure than those that use hubs, but this is a little more expensive.

What is the use of Router in Computer Network?

A router is a network device that connects together two or more networks, not computers. A common use of a router is to join a home or a business network (LAN) to the internet (WAN). Routers are specialized devices that are used to send messages from a source to a destination.

What is the use of Bridge in Computer Network?

A bridge is a network device that typically links together two different part of a LAN, where a router is usually used to link a LAN to a WAN (such as the internet). A bridge links independent part of a LAN so that, they can act as a single LAN.

What is the use of Repeater in Computer Network?

Since a signal slowly loses strength, as it passes along a cable, it is often necessary to boost the signal with a device called repeater. The repeater electrically amplifies the signal it receives and rebroadcasts it.

What is the use of Firewall in Computer Network?

A firewall is a networking device that is installed at the entrance of a LAN when connecting networks together, particularly when connecting a private network to a public network, such as the internet. The firewall uses rules to filter traffic into and out of the private network, to protect the private network. Firewalls are either hardware or software, depending on their use.

What is the use of Modem in Computer Network?

Modem is an electronic device, which is used to connect telephone line with computer.

Modulate + Demodulate = Modem

A computer understands digital signals on the other hand telephone line transfer analog signals, it work as a translator and converts analog into digital and vice versa.

What is NIC (Network Interface Card)?

NIC is an expansion card, which is installed inside a computer to connect network cable. These days motherboard comes with preinstalled NIC.

What are the different types of Internet Access?

Internet Service Provider (ISP like BSNL, Jio) provide Internet in the following forms

1) Dial-up connection:

It uses a telephone link or cable to dial into an ISP and a modem attached to a computer. The ISP helps to establish modem link, which is then routed to the Internet. The user is connected temporarily to the Internet through any service provider.

Disadvantages:

Dial-up connections are very slow.

When connected to the Internet, the sample phone line can’t be used for making or receiving calls.

2) Broadband Connections:

It is a high speed Internet Access. Broadband connectivity doesn’t even disturb your telephone use. It carries both voice and data over a single wire. Voice uses the lower end of frequency spectrum while the data uses the higher end. The same telephone line is split into two separate channels. Broadband connection speeds are measured in mbps. Broadband service is available in three ways;

Cable Modem: It is the same connection that delivers cable TV. It is fast and reliable.

3) Digital Subscriber Line (DSL): It uses your existing phone line, and you can use Internet as well voice calls at same time.

4) Satellite: It is used where cable modem and DSL broadband technologies are not available. It is slow and can be interpreted by bad weather.

5) Wireless Internet Connection:

It involves the use of technologies such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX and satellites. The wireless technology uses radio or microwaves for transmission of data.
